La Camera degli Sposi di Andrea Mantegna: glorificazione dei Gonzaga

Voglio oggi narrarvi la storia della splendida Camera degli Sposi, considerata uno dei massimi capolavori della storia dell’arte di tutti i tempi;

Today I want to tell you the story of the splendid Camera degli Sposi, considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of art of all time; it was frescoed by Andrea Mantegna between 1465 and 1474, commissioned by the Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg, on the main floor of the northern tower of the Castle of San Giorgio in Mantua. This extraordinary environment is famous, above all, for the sumptuous glorification of the Gonzaga family in the mural paintings on the walls and for the illusionistic opening of the vault.
The Gonzaga dynasty came to power in 1328 and remained in the Po Valley until the eighteenth century, establishing itself first as a marquisate and, subsequently, as a duchy. The Po Valley area, despite a structural political instability caused by the presence of small courts, retained a rather stable political structure at least until the extinction of the Farnese and Gonzaga dynasties in the first half of the eighteenth century. Since the fifteenth century, the entire territory was equipped with an effective road system that allowed the connection between every urban center and the countryside.

The Gonzaga duchy, which together with the other domains of the family such as Bozzolo, Guastalla, Novellara, Sabbioneta, Suzzara, was located on the border with the lordship of Milan, the Venetian republic and the Este duchy, was a homogeneous area, characterized by its own political and cultural system. Through a skilful matrimonial policy that had contributed to forging ties with the Empire, Spain and the South and also with important families of the Lombardy - Venetian, Emilian and Roman areas, the Gonzaga family managed to maintain a leading role, for more than two centuries, in the European and Italian political context.
In 1460 Andrea Mantegna (1431 – 1506) went to Mantua, the city of the Gonzagas, beginning the longest and most continuous relationship between an artist and a noble court; between 1441 and 1448 he frequented the workshop of Francesco Squarcione, from Padua. In his activity he was influenced by the design of the Tuscans which always had to prevail over color and statuary form; having gone to Ferrara he came into contact with the paintings of the Flemish Rogier Van der Weyden and with the works of Piero della Francesca which sharpened his passion for perspective. Through study and comparison with Venetian antiquarians, Mantegna increased his archaeological knowledge which enriched his paintings.

Andrea remained in Mantua until his death, becoming the official painter of the Gonzaga court, in the pay of three subsequent members of the family: Ludovico (1444 – 1478), Federico (1478 – 1484) and Francesco (1484 – 1519). Relations with the Gonzaga family were not always simple, in fact the painter, on several occasions, had to request payments or refuse the execution of works far from his artistic poetics.
In exchange, however, he obtained great glory and important commissions, also meeting Leon Battista Alberti called by Ludovico Gonzaga to build the churches of Sant'Andrea and San Sebastiano and Luca Fancelli, the architect who carried out these works, gifted with great talent as witnessed by the creation of the new wing of the castle of Mantua that he designed. Andrea then had the opportunity to meet some of the most important members of the family, in particular with Federico Gonzaga, a passionate collector of classical antiquities and with Isabella d'Este, wife of Francesco Gonzaga, also a collector of antiques and modern paintings.
After having carried out different activities, such as the design for heraldic uniforms, tapestries, tombs and after having decorated the country villas of the Gonzagas, which unfortunately have now disappeared, Mantegna, probably in 1465, began to create the Camera degli Sposi, a decorative cycle monumental, mixed with tempera and fresco.
The great undertaking was carried out on the main floor of the north tower of the Castle of San Giorgio, an imposing manor built at the end of the 14th century thanks to the Captain of the People Francesco I Gonzaga; the fortress was later modified on behalf of Ludovico II, becoming a sumptuous residence. Surrounded on four sides by a moat, it represents one of the greatest examples of late medieval military architecture in the area.

The decoration created by Mantegna ended in 1474 as attested in the dedicatory plaque which mentions Ludovico Gonzaga and his wife Barbara of Brandenburg, German, but raised as a child in Mantua; at the time this room was not used as a bridal chamber but, rather, as a reception room. The subjects represented, therefore, could not reflect private tones of life or compositional freedom but, rather, possess a courtly and celebratory tone. Despite everything, however, the great artist included some details in the narrative that served as interludes such as the dwarf, the children and the dogs.
The room can, without a doubt, be identified as the "camera depincta" mentioned in a document dating back to the end of the fifteenth century, which allows it to also be recognized in the "camera magna picta" mentioned in a document from 1475. The celebration of Gonzaga dynasty begins on two walls of the room, interspersed with painted pillars, where scenes of court life are depicted; on the north wall, partly occupied by a fireplace, Ludovico Gonzaga is represented listening to a message from his secretary Marsilio Andreasi.
Near the man there are other members of the family among which his wife Barbara stands out, who sits in front of him; several courtiers are intent on going up and down a staircase that leads to the platform where the gentlemen are positioned. This rise is, in reality, the fireplace itself that the artist boldly inserted into the narrative; the story continues on the west wall, divided into three parts, and occupied in the center by the plaque I mentioned before, supported by a festive group of cherubs, while on the sides appear other episodes of courtly life in which there are beautiful landscape views, populated by ancient monuments.

The family celebration continues in the vault where, on a gold background, the medallions with the fake busts of the first eight Roman emperors are placed, from Julius Caesar to Otto, according to the succession present in the Lives of Suetonius; the decorative undertaking ends in the sails, with the twelve lunettes in which episodes taken from mythology are depicted. Three moments narrate the myth of Arion, three episodes that of Orpheus and six lunettes are reserved for the narration of Hercules' exploits: these subjects alluded, in all likelihood, to the prevalence of poetry (Arion) and music (Orpheus) over ignorance, and of civilization, embodied by Hercules, over monsters.
Arion, mythical singer of Thrace, embarks on a ship of pirates who want to rob him; with his melodious song he attracts a dolphin who takes him to safety and the story ends with Periander carrying out justice on the sailors. Orpheus enchants Cerberus and a Fury with the sound of his lyre but, in the end, he is torn apart by the Maenads offended by his indifferent behavior. Some of Hercules' labors follow such as: Hercules shoots the arrow at the centaur Nessus, represented in the next sail pierced while trying to kidnap Deianira; Hercules against the Nemean lion, against the Lernaean Hydra, against Antaeus and, finally, against Cerberus.

Some scholars interpreted these frescoes as exemplifications of the prince's virtues and talents; others saw a contrast between the active life, symbolized by Hercules, and the contemplative life, represented by poets and musicians. The one who holds power would therefore have to balance the exercise of the arts of war (Hercules) with education in the refined arts of poetry and music (Arion and Orpheus). This last prerogative was exercised in particular by Ludovico Gonzaga and Vittorino da Feltre who founded a school in Mantua that implemented humanistic ideals.

In the center of the ceiling Andrea Mantegna created a bold perspective illusion open towards the outside: he broke through the vault with a well-shaped oculus on which he placed, with truly daring views, eight winged cherubs, women's faces and a bird. The view of this oculus represents the most complex perspective construction of the Italian fifteenth century; not even Melozzo da Forlì, in the dome of Loreto, managed to create the view from below with such rigor and realism. The base of the oculus is surrounded by a magnificent festoon of fruit and branches intertwined with ribbons; there are many references to classical art such as plant racemes and palmettes.
Among the characters represented, a black woman also appears, perhaps due to the presence of slaves at the Gonzaga court; worthy of note are a large wooden basin containing an orange plant and an apple held in the hand by a putto, all obtained with truly daring views which, however, do not interfere with the correct readability of what is depicted. The woman next to the slave was recognized as the portrait of the Marchioness Barbara of Brandenburg. The attributes that accompany the cherubs were read, by some critics, as emblems of immortality: I am referring to the peacock (near the oculus), and the apple linked to the apple of Original Sin and the mystery of the incarnation and of the resurrection.
In the Bridal Chamber, Mantegna did not want to depict an idealized humanity or an aspiration to an otherworldly nobility but a family portrait that only reflected the truth; the Marquis Ludovico expresses his value through his tired face, his wife Barbara is depicted in her Germanic harshness and even the children are represented with all their defects. Gianfrancesco with his soft forms, and the youngest, Ludovico and Paola, engraved, almost cruelly, in their excessive thinness.
